Biographical / Historical
Leonard "Bull" Durham (August 27, 1925- June 4, 2016). Born and raised in Glen Carbon, IL, Durham served with the United States Navy during the Second World War. He served aboard submarines (USS Crevalle) and was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. After receiving his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral (Zoology and Aquatic Ecology) degrees from the University of Illinois, Durham joined the EIU faculty in 1956. Positions held at EIU include Director of the Division of Life Sciences (a program that combined zoology and botany); Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Chair, Department of Zoology; and Chair, Foreign Languages Department. Durham also served as City Commissioner of Charleston for eight years.
