Biographical Note: James Edgar is a Republican politician who has held several offices in the state of Illinois.  Edgar was born on July 22, 1946, in Vinita, Oklahoma, and was raised in Charleston, Illinois. In 1968 he graduated from Eastern Illinois University, where he majored in history and served as student body president. He was named an EIU Distinguished Alumnus in 1982. Edgar has served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives (1977-1979), Illinois Secretary of State (1981-1991), and Governor of Illinois (1991-1998). He is married to the former Brenda Smith; they have two children, Brad and Elizabeth
