Biographical / Historical

Daniel Ezra Marvin (1938-2008) served as president from 1971-1976. He was 38 years old when he became president of EIU, making him the university’s youngest president. During his tenure, Eastern’s enrollment topped 10,000, and the Tarble Arts Center was built. The Marvin Foyer in Booth Library is dedicated to him. Marvin was born in Pennsylvania in 1938. He earned a Ph.D. in cardiac and respiratory physiology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After leaving Eastern, he became president of First National Bank of Mattoon.
