Biography
Gilbert Courtland Fite (1918-2010) served as president from 1971-1976. While president, Eastern established a degree program to accommodate non-traditional students and developed off-campus and continuing education programs. Born in Ohio in 1918, Fite received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Missouri. Well-known as a scholar specializing in agricultural history, he taught at the University of Oklahoma for 25 years before coming to EIU.
